Diablo III is an Action RPG computer game developed by Blizzard Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The game also contains elements of the Action/RPG and dungeon crawl genres.

The game is part of the Diablo series of games and a direct sequel to Diablo II. The game, like the previous parts of the series, takes place in a dark fantasy world called Sanctuary. Events unfold around the struggle of the army of Heaven with the army of Hell for the world of Sanctuary. The player characters are not direct followers of these factions, but they gravitate towards the forces of Heaven, as the armies of Hell seek to enslave and destroy Sanctuary, their home world.

The game was announced at the Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational in Paris on June 28, 2008, and beta testing ended on May 1, 2012.

It was available for purchase on the battle.net website from March 15, 2012. The English version was released on May 15, 2012, and the Russian version of the game was released on June 7, 2012. The Russian language was not included in the international client, which was released on May 15: it became available only on June 7. In the first 24 hours of sales, Diablo III sold more than 3.5 million copies, setting a new sales record for PC games, with a total of 6.3 million copies sold in the first week.

On February 20, 2013, at a conference dedicated to the announcement of Sony PlayStation 4, a partnership between Blizzard and Sony was announced. The two companies have immediate plans to release Diablo 3 on the PlayStation 3 (released on September 3, 2013, at the same time as the Xbox 360) and PlayStation 4 consoles. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of Diablo 3 was released on August 19, 2014 and is called the Ultimate Evil Edition. This version also comes with the Reaper of Souls add-on. Ultimate Evil Edition is also available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It supports transferring saves between seventh and eighth generation consoles. The PlayStation 4 version includes an exclusive armor set from Shadow of the Colossus and a dungeon based on The Last of Us.
