Fire and Blood

is an autobiographical novella written in the form of a military clerk’s diary during his service in Chechnya.

The narrator finds himself inside a small, enclosed military world where war exists side by side with ordinary daily life, fear with boredom, friendship with humiliation, cruelty with unexpected acts of humanity. Telephone-switchboard shifts, strained relations between soldiers and officers, barracks life, drinking, conflicts, brief moments of freedom, and his feelings for a young female radio operator gradually form the chronicle of a man trying to preserve his identity within a system built on obedience.

This is not a heroic war story and not primarily a story about combat. The Communications Hub is about a human being inside the military machine — about dignity, loneliness, love, fear, and the strange persistence of ordinary life even in the shadow of war.
